Why Indian School Road? The Arizona street enjoying more traffic than any other should have an equal concentration of prosperity. “The Road Most Travelled” can, and will eventually be, a destination for shopping, dining and commerce. It is simply a matter of cooperatively applying our efforts to achieve this worthwhile goal. How do we make this goal a reality?Pride is the most important element needed to make this positive change. Once area residents and businesses become collectively dedicated to improving safety, beauty and cooperation, the job will be largely completed. We need to raise our expectations in regards to safety. Living, working and recreating in a low crime area will promote a greater sense of community. A safer community will encourage more pedestrian traffic and outdoor gatherings along Indian School Road. A few easy steps to improve safety are to work with your neighborhood association or apartment management to host an event where local law enforcement can present ideas and strategies. Prevention is the best medicine and the police know how to prevent criminal activity. Getting to know your neighbors is another great idea. This way you can watch out for each other. Block Watch is another super way to take action to help make your area much safer. Beautification is the easiest thing that we can do to demonstrate community pride. We can all make a big difference with very little effort or expense. Try simple steps like painting neglected surfaces, tending to landscaping and picking up trash. Neighborhoods are unfairly judged by the appearance of the nearest major streets. This creates a priority for cleaning up Indian School Road. Cooperation between Indian School Road businesses and the nearby residents will strengthen alliances and provide many opportunities for us to help each other. Residents can contribute by buying from area businesses. This basic ingredient for success can be advanced by making an effort to locate all of the products and services that you need from local vendors before driving past these companies to go elsewhere to shop, dine and recreate. Many of us drive miles out of our way to get a meal, hair cut or medical services. This is just a habit. It can be changed. You will drive less, save time and keep your dollars working in your community. Sales taxes are used to pay for important services like fire fighters and police officers. Be sure to make your major purchases like cars, furniture, jewelry and appliances the city where you live. If not, you are sort of picking the pockets of the police and fire departments that you rely upon for your safety. Businesses can support their resident neighbors in several ways. Some free ways to help the neighborhood are to show respect for parking regulations, noise ordinances and to pick up trash near your place of business. Most neighborhoods have an association of some kind. By attending meetings, you will build trust, respect and friendships with your neighbors. With a friendly relationship in place, potential issues can be resolved with a quick phone call or meeting as opposed to police or government involvement. Neighborhood newsletters offer an inexpensive advertising opportunity to reach a very targeted audience. Event sponsorship is another way to get involved with the neighborhood. They may do an annual clean up, fundraiser or community meal. A small donation of time, resources or money can yield big dividends in neighborhood loyalty. Keeping your business store front clean and well maintained will do much more than inviting extra customers. The pride that you show though a well maintained building will attract more responsible business owners to your area. It is not expensive to keep your windows clean, apply fresh paint and to maintain landscaping. If you prefer not to do these things yourself, try to find a nearby business or contractor to help you to keep your place of business looking good.
